The uncertainty of the current business climate
has forced business educators to rethink the role of ethics in business
school curricula. As reported in a recent edition of Fortune Magazine,
business schools from Harvard to Stanford have begun adding courses or
changing content to more closely examine social responsibility. The
Fortune article cites as one example the New England College of Business
and Finance (NECB), which is now offering an online Master's Degree in
Business Ethics and Compliance -- a first-of-its-kind in the nation. The
program uses both traditional instruction and also the case method in
looking at what went wrong with some infamous corporations such as Enron.
Courses such as the "Culture of Ethics and Competition" are balanced with
more hard-nosed "Forensic Accounting." Graduates learn what makes good
governance and ethical conduct. They also learn to spot problems in their
companies before those problems get bigger.
NECB brought in both government leaders like the former Attorney General of Massachusetts, Scott Harshbarger, and banking compliance officers to help formulate the curriculum. "We wanted to make sure that our curriculum was pragmatically grounded and not just an exercise in philosophy," said Dr. Carol Anderson, NECB Vice President of Academic Affairs. With the expected overhaul in financial regulations, the number of compliance jobs is likely to grow exponentially. In today's downsized job market, NECB graduates will gain a potential edge for those kinds of jobs. NECB's MBE degree is offered entirely online at a cost per student of under $20,000. This unique online degree program can be completed in 15 months.
